Huck Finn Questions V-XI

1.) Pap is disgusted to see that his son is getting an education, and he tells Huck that if he sees him at the school learning again, he’ll beat him dreadfully. He doesn't want no son of his getting an education, cause he never got one either. So he doesn't want Huck to become better than him at anything.

3.) He feels that that’s the only place he feels safe from everyone else in the world. Somewhere where he can just get away and feel relaxed and have peace, away from friends, away from the Widow and Miss Watson. And mostly away from where ever his Pap can find him. It reflects the theme of civilized society, and how he would rather be alone than just surrounded by many people.

6.) How Huck thinks that Tom only gets his into trouble, or his plans are dumb and never are successful. But this time, he wants Tom there cause Huck cant come up with a good escape plan like Tom could. The plan would have ended up in disaster cause then Tom would have wanted to come along with them, and would have made it easier for Huck to get caught cause then Tom would want to steal something for the road, or bring along the rest of the gang with him. The plan would have been a complete failure if Tom went. He’s loud and obnoxious, and would get Huck, himself, and Jim caught.

7.) After the Widow Douglas tells him about prayer, Huck prays for food, and in return he finds bread to eat. He’s so grateful for the food, he begins to believe that prayer is a true thing in life now, so he starts praying more and more as the days go by.

8.) He has it in him now to take the risk of running away from his slave house with the Widow. Huck talks Jim into going to Jackson Island to escape the
His whole entire mind is changed now; he’s sees a new beginning by running off with Jim to Jackson Island. This is the rebirth of Huck Finn. In his mind, Huck is thinking like, what if Pap finds me, or any other white person? They see I’m with a slave, and they’re going to kill him if they find us. I don’t want to live with Widow Douglas and Miss Watson anymore, I want to be free.

9.) Huck comes up with the idea to run away from the house, and take Jim with him, so Jim can make it up river, and become a free man. Huck’s mind is telling him no, but his heart is saying yes, go for it, become a free man yourself. Live your own life in freedom.

10.) Shows that society doesn’t agree with what slavery is doing to people. And the people who own slaves, or agree with the terms of having slaves.

11.) For one, he tried to listen to what the hairball was trying to say as if it was talking to him, and tried to listen to the hairball’s prediction. Jim doesn’t have any education whatsoever, but his predictions are coming true, and Huck begins to respect him.

12.) It seems that Huck learned to play practical jokes like that one people from his friend Tom Sawyer. Huck puts a snake in Jim’s sleeping bag, and the snake ends up biting Jim hard, making him scream loudly. Huck learns that when some jokes are funny, then some are mean. He regrets what he did to Jim, cause he’s a true adult friend, not a teenager like the others. But it’s like Huck’s character anyways, it’s in his true nature.

13.) That he truly has a heart, and is trying to show to Jim that he is a nice guy at heart, and he wants to be friends. He hides Jim all the time when people come. He truly wants to help Jim.

15.) Huck finds out that if someone finds his Pap, they receive $200. If someone finds the slave Jim, they’ll receive $300. The satire in this is that Jim is worth more than Pap, cause he’s a runaway slave. Nobody cares if he’s dead or alive; as long as he doesn't get farther away than he already is. Pap stole a bunch of whiskey and ran off too. He’s wanted for stealing and other things. If you kill Pap, then you can go to jail only cause he’s a white man.

Young Goodman Brown Questions

1) When Goodman Brown journeys into the forest at night where he breaks his faith with his wife and his life. He makes a turn for the worst which leads him down the wrong trail of life.



2) Pink Ribbons: clean, pure, honor.

Faith: she's Goodman's wife, but represent the honor and respect of life and faith itself.

Devil: Brown goes into the dark forest with his staff, which has a snake on it, which could symbolize the devil.


3) I feel as though Brown is having an illusion to what he is truly feeling inside in his heart. It's as though all these events are happening between him, the devil, Faith, and others all in one swoop of a day. You can't just go from a normal life, to a chain reaction of weird events all of a sudden.

6) Sometimes the story seemed to hop back and forth, and i got confused with alot of the diologue in the story, but all in all, i was amused by the words of Hawthorne.
Young Goodman Brown is a Puritan man from the town of Salem, Massachusetts in the 1600s. All is good, until he decides to set off into the forest with some dark figure [possibly the Devil]. When he returns, he is a new man. His wife, Faith, doesn't see the man that she fell in love with. Brown is

7) He is, mostly on the parts of Goodman Brown and Faith. Faith more than Goodman. Hawthorne makes Faith seem to represent many things in this story, such as heaven, honor, and respect. As to Goodman, who in my opinion, seems to represent the Devil.

8) The theme could be a variety of subjects. for the most part it could repesent faith vs. disrespect. In the beginning, Brown was able to have full faith in himself and in his wife and others. This is until he goes into the forest with the strange man, and comes back a different person. He is then showing no respect to anyone, not even his wife. She doesn't seem to love him anymore.

2A) ASKS EACH PERSON FOR CONFIRMITY. EMERSON TELLS THEM THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE SELF-RELIANCE INSTEAD.

2B) THINKS EVERYONE SHOULD ACT HOWEVER THEY WANT TO ACT, BUT IN A WAY STILL SHOW RESPECT. NONCONFORMITY TO EMERSON MEANS THAT PEOPLE SHOULDN'T ACT A WAY AS THOUGH THEY ARE NOT ACCEPTED BY OTHERS.

5B) GO FOR WHAT YOU TRULY WANT IN LIFE, AND DON'T EVER LET SOMEONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. YOU AN CHANGE THE VIEW OF OTHERS AND THE WORLD AROUND YOU, ONLY YOU HAVE THE POWER TO SHOW WHAT'S RIGHT. Virginia Convention

1a.He's saying that everyone should have the chance to speak their mind, and be able to argue between eachother on whether it be good or bad and if people agree with their opinion(s) or not.

1b. He speaks to everyone rather than just the British people, and applies his own actions to get his word out to everyone.

2a. Instead of going into war, they just argue about it for years and years as they pass on by.

2b. He doesn't trust them , and finds it to be pointless to just keep talking about the situation, rather than taking action.

3a. That there will be a revolt, and his choice to the fight back.

3b. Sees peace as being just a replacement for war, but there is no peace, so there has to be war.

4a. British want to talk about it and figure it out, but the colonists want to begin a war between eachother to settle it all.

4b. Maybe if they were more developed and had more power it wouldnt be as hard as it seemed.

Sinners in the Hands of an Anger God

1a. everyone says that an average person is nearly just as equal to one another, but for Edwards, to him, it is only God.

1b. It represents the fact that God is holding them, and if he were to drop them, they would fall into the abyss and depths of hell. When the rock falls through the web, it shows the sinner's unkindness

2b. he shows God's anger by using thunder storm clouds and wind. Stands for the fact that nature is all together,

3a. It says that a person's heart must go through a great change for God to be born once again. And that they must become dead to sin, and newly alive to God.

3b. Many different things show that God is ready to bring all the people to harmony and justice, and send the sinners to the depths of hell.

4a. Says that sinners are bugs and shows how angry and how badly God treats them.

4b. It could show people that they're merely in the hands of God, and if he were to let them go, there would be nothing left.

5a. I agree with what roll a lord should take if he would want to be a true leader to the tribe. When it says that he should respect everyone and not just himself, that's taking into consideration that he must treat everyone equally. Not one person is left behind, and that the thickness of your skin shall be seven spans -- which is to say that you shall be proof against anger, offensive actions and criticism.


1b. To show respect for his fellow companions and leaders of different tribes. And to bring peace to his tribe himself, and for the respect of nature around him. Due to the fact that everything around them was respected and honored by them, anyone who was able to withstand all the skills necessary, they could be able to take the stand and maybe someday become the leader of a tribe.

2b. No they aren't really related, but he sees them as cousins because they are natives as well. Their tribes are equal to one another in Dekanawidah's eyes, and wants only peace and love between all the tribes.

3b. A leader should have full respect for the entire tribe, and honor his commitments and take care of everyone around him and not just himself. He should be able to handle anything thrown at him, and respect the land and nature. The leader shall also have NO self-interest whatsoever, but still show honor in some way.

4b. They treat nature as if it were their own family member. They bring trees peace, pray to them, and say thanks to them for their usefulness in canoes, housing, weapons, and other objects.
