Chapter 7 Journal

Gatsby begins to call off all his parties, and actually fires all his servants, and hires new ones that don't truly act like servants. Nick decides to drive over to Tom and Daisy's house for lunch, but when he arrives there, he finds Jordan Baker and Gatsby there as well. A nurse walks into the room with a baby, which is tom and Daisys. Gatsby is stunned and cannot believe it's actually her baby. Daisy asks Gatsby if he would like to go into town. Gatsby, all love struck by Daisy, makes Tom notice that they might have or will be with eachother sooner or they did before. Tom, butting in, tells Daisy that he wants to go to the city together, but Daisy isn't amused by his answer. Tom, Nick, and Jordan all ride in Gatsby's car, while Gatsby and Daisy ride together in Tom's car. They stop at Wilsons gas station, where Tom gets out and see Wilson, looking like he's dead sick. Tom relizes that Wilson has found out that Myrtle has been having an affair but doesn't know with who. Wilson wants to move her west, so hopefully they can start fresh.
The friends decide to check into a suite at the plaza hotel, where Tom and Gatsby begino tussle with eachother. Tom states to Gatsby that he hates it when Gatsby calls him 'old sport' all the time. Tom also claims that Gatsby never attended Oxford before. This make Gatsby shout out that Daisy only loves him, and not Tom. Tom claims that Gatsby is a bootlegger, and a crook all along with Wolfsheim.
Daisy begins to realize that she does love Gatsby, but she also loves Tom the more and more she spends with him as well. After all thi dram set in, Nick then realizes that it's his 30th birthday. While driving back to their homes, Nick, Jordan and Tom realize tha theres been an accident. Michealis the restaurant owner from next door said that a yellow car hit her while she was in the road. right away, Tom claims that Gatsby hit Myrtle, but isn't completely sure. When Nick gets back, he finds Gatsby in the bushes waiting til Tom and Daisy are in the same room together, and to see if Tom hurts her. He sees them in the dining room with ale and cold fried chicken on the table, holding eachothers hands. Gatsby says he'll take all the blame for Myrtle's death, only because Daisy was the one driving. Nick leaves Gatsby standing in the moonlight alone.

Chapter 6 Journal

A news reporter arrives at Gatsby's house after hearing numerous rumors running back and forth through the office he works at. Gatsby is shocked when he arrives at his house, not knowing what to say to him in the process. After asking many questions, the reporter leaves his house, but that's after Nick tells him about Gatsby's history from what Gatsby told Nick. We find out that Gatsby attended St. Olaf college in North Dakota instead of attending Yale like he said. We also found out that Gatsby used to fish for salmon and dig for clams in Lake Superior. Thats where he saw Dan Cody's yacht. He rowed over to his boat to tell him there was a storm coming. Gatsby was taken in by Cody, who made him his assistant. This is where Gatsby got used to his wealthiness world. When Cody died, he left Gatsby $25,000, but Cody's mistress, Ella Kaye, wouldn't let him keep it, so Gatsby decided to become wealthy himself.
Nick goes over to Gatsby's house one day since he hasn't seen him in awhile, and finds Tom there with Gatsby. He walks in and noticed two other people, Mr. and Mrs. Sloane, two very wealthy people and Tom's friends. Gatsby informs Tom that he knows Daisy fairly well, and Tom get s a little pissed off. They invite Gatsby over for dinner, well Tom does, cause he knows Gatby has no social skill at all.
Tom and Daisy go to Gatsby's party the next Saturday, where Tom gets all nosey about Gatsby and Daisy. Tom tells Daisy that Gatsby's wealth comes from bootlegging and Daisyget upset, yelling at Tom that his money comes from stores he owns. This ruins Daisy's night even more for her, and they leave. But during the party, Daisy makes a remark to Tom saying here's my gold pencil. Which she's trying to say is that she knows Tom wants to get some numbers from girls at the party. After they leave, Gatsby wishes she stayed. Nick and Gatsby fight about her, and how Gatsby thinks he can remake the past with Daisy.

Chapter 5 Journal

When Nick arrives back at his house, he isn't close enough to realize that it's Gatsby's house, must completely lit up with lights on all around the house! Nick first thought it was on fire, but it turns out Gatsby turned on all the lights in hope that Daisy will notice his house sometime. Gatsby is all jittery, wanting Nick to go to Coney Island with him, and to go swimming in his pool. All Gatsby wants is for Nick to follow through with the plan to invite Jordan and Daisy over for tea, but not for Daisy to know that Gatsby will be there. Gatsby offers to cut Nicks grass, even though it rains on the day of the meeting. Later on, Jordan and Daisy arrive at Gatsby's, only for Daisy to notice that Gatsby is there as well. Gatsby is super nervous, only to knock the clock off the mantelpiece, in discouragement. Later, Gatsby shows Daisy around after building some courage and excitement. He shows her his room, which she notices he has a ton of new shirts that haven't been worn. She starts to cry, and leaves, puzzling Gatsby. But before she leaves, he tells her that he wants to be with her.

Chapter 4 Journal

Nick tries to figure out who all attended Gatsbys party. He gets some names, but not all of them. Later him and Gatsby head to New York where they are supposed to have lunch together. They chat about what has happened to Gatsby in the past and where he attended college. And that he had collected jewels an went big game hunting in Europe for years. They are driving down the road, and a policeman stops them, pulling Gatsby over. He pulls out a card, which he shows to the policeman, who lets Gatsby go, confusing Nick.
Nick then meets Mr. Wolfshiem. They talk, then later Gatsby reveals that Wolfshiem fixed the 1919 World Series. Later, Nick finds Jordan, which tells him what her and Gatsby were chatting about at the party. She tells him that Gatsby is in love with Daisy, and wants to be back together with her. She used to live in Kentucky, where all the officers loved her, but the one she noticed the most was Gatsby, who was stationed by her house. Gatsby then had to leave for war, and Daisy ended up marrying Tom. This is why Gatsby had bought his mansion by her house, so he could get the chance to fall back into each others arms.
Gatsby asks Nick to set up a little date so that Daisy would come over for tea. Gatsby gets jitters just thinking about it.

Study Questions Chapter 3

1. That he’s related to Kaiser, an old dictator. He was a spy for the German’s during the war. That he has killed a man before but acts natural, and that he’s a bootlegger, someone who sells knock offs of popular things illegally.

2. He’s not careless like Jordan Baker told him. And he doesn’t’ know anybody else at the party besides Jordan, who he ends up hanging out with the whole time, until he meets Gatsby for the first time.

3. He has a bunch of uncut books, which means that they haven’t been read before, and he has all these trinkets from when he supposedly went to Oxford, like a medallion with his name on the back.


4. He remembers him from college, supposedly Oxford, cause it’s close to Princeton. Nick doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

5. That she cheated in a golf tournament. She had moved her ball so she could have a better opening in her shot towards the pin. The caddy was going to tell on her, but refrained himself from bursting out words.

6. He writes many letters back to Minnesota, writing love on every one of them before he signs his name. That he may have a lady friend back home, but now that he lives in a different part of the country, that he may break up with that girl, and try his luck with Jordan.

7. He sees things that aren’t happening [car crash]. And he believes he’s been drunk for about an entire week now, which is strange.

8. Someone has crashed into a ditch, where a pale man gets out of the car, stating that he didn’t know that the car had stopped. Everyone thinks he’s a ghost or spirit that descended from the sky. Apparently the wheel had fallen off the car too, so this freaks everyone out. Then Owl Eyes tries to drive himself, which is unsuccessful, but then Jordan tries to make herself known, as the worst driver ever. She almost hits someone, but nicks his button with the bumper. This says that driving can easily be the meaning of death, or lead someone to death.

9. He finally meet Gatsby, Owl Eyes, see the real Jordan Baker, and witness how she feels and the true her. Reinforces the idea of bad drivers, and relationships.

10. This is where Nick finally meets Gatsby. They talk about everything in Gatsby past and a little about Nick. Shows you is a way what kind of person Gatsby is, but what he may tell you might not all be true. When Gatsby stated that he had attended Oxford, when Nick sees all his uncut books, this makes him see Gatsby as a different person and liar.

11. Bad Drivers, Car Crash, Inebriation.

12. Owl Eyes, Gatsby, Nick&Jordan, Car Crash, Nick asking Jordan out, Gatsby wanting to tell Jordan a secret, Nick and Gatsby conversing.

13. So she can have full control over the date and not have to be told what to do, but can be the one telling him what to do, since he never graduated high school.

The Great Gatsby Vocabulary

All the women were behaving appropriately, accept this one girl, who had a decadent persona.

The hairy old man proved his risque behavior towards the high school girls during a get together.

The Red Sox and Yankees armistice for fair play ended about a week later.

The girls rendezvoused at the mall from 10am-5pm.

That destitute man just sat in his house all day, eating chips and drinking soda.
