A news reporter arrives at Gatsby's house after hearing numerous rumors running back and forth through the office he works at. Gatsby is shocked when he arrives at his house, not knowing what to say to him in the process. After asking many questions, the reporter leaves his house, but that's after Nick tells him about Gatsby's history from what Gatsby told Nick. We find out that Gatsby attended St. Olaf college in North Dakota instead of attending Yale like he said. We also found out that Gatsby used to fish for salmon and dig for clams in Lake Superior. Thats where he saw Dan Cody's yacht. He rowed over to his boat to tell him there was a storm coming. Gatsby was taken in by Cody, who made him his assistant. This is where Gatsby got used to his wealthiness world. When Cody died, he left Gatsby $25,000, but Cody's mistress, Ella Kaye, wouldn't let him keep it, so Gatsby decided to become wealthy himself.
Nick goes over to Gatsby's house one day since he hasn't seen him in awhile, and finds Tom there with Gatsby. He walks in and noticed two other people, Mr. and Mrs. Sloane, two very wealthy people and Tom's friends. Gatsby informs Tom that he knows Daisy fairly well, and Tom get s a little pissed off. They invite Gatsby over for dinner, well Tom does, cause he knows Gatby has no social skill at all.
Tom and Daisy go to Gatsby's party the next Saturday, where Tom gets all nosey about Gatsby and Daisy. Tom tells Daisy that Gatsby's wealth comes from bootlegging and Daisyget upset, yelling at Tom that his money comes from stores he owns. This ruins Daisy's night even more for her, and they leave. But during the party, Daisy makes a remark to Tom saying here's my gold pencil. Which she's trying to say is that she knows Tom wants to get some numbers from girls at the party. After they leave, Gatsby wishes she stayed. Nick and Gatsby fight about her, and how Gatsby thinks he can remake the past with Daisy.
