Grapes of Wrath "Monster"

To me, the machine is a symbol of destruction and anger. All it does is cut down fields and crops that farmer's have attended to all their lives pretty much, striving over their fields day after day, just to have it taken away from them because the bank doesn't want them there anymore. Whoever is operating this behemith of a tractor, AKA Willy Freely, is also becoming part of a tractor. For a man that operates a tractor all day just for three dollars, is a working monkey for the bank. A poor man who would do anything to feed his family. This Monster is the symbol for machines, capitalism, and humanity. Nothing but unfairness work put towards driving innocent farmers away fro their hard earned and heat scolding lands.

Grapes of Wrath: Turtle

All the turtle wants to do is cross the road and be free. As he's making his way across, a car stands to speed up the road, a Sedan that is. It doesn't see the turtle until the last split second and veers off to the side almost crushing the turtle. Even if it were to hit it, I don't think that it would have crushed the turtle, since his shell is extremely tough to shatter. He continues on his way across the street, when another car speeds down the road. This time though, the car tries to hit the turtle. Nicking the side of the shell, the turtle spins out of control, popping it's head and legs back into the shell for protection.
Good thing that the turtle has a hard exterior shell, that's almost indestructible. The slow movement of the turtle gives off the view that this turtle acts like an old person trying to get somewhere. Turtles have been around for many years, hundreds, maybe even thousands and millions. They can make it through anything that comes their way.

Grapes of Wrath (chapters 1-2)

Chapter 1

The story begins with the explanation of the Dust Bowl, and how it had affected the lands of the Panhandle and such. The dust blew in all over the territory and crops of many farmers, into homes and buildings, cars and anything alike. Men stand along their crop fields, gazing in disbelief at their newly ruined crops, knowing that their food wouldn't be eatable.

Setting: The Red and Grey Country, Panhandle Area, Oklahoma and Nebraska territory.

Chapter 2

The story moves towards a truck stop diner, where we find a large man sitting at the counter on a stool, wearing nothing but brand new cheap clothes. As he sips his coffee, he interacts with the waitress, trying to draw up conversation and the needless random questions. The man leaves the diner, only to find a man sitting outside, just waiting to ask him for a ride. We later find out that the hitchhikers name is Joad, a convicted man who commited homicide. As the roll on down the road, we learn the pasts and presents of the two men. Both with great intentions in their eyes. At the end of the chapter, Joad is let out at the beginning of a dirt road, as the man in the red truck squeels away down the other way.

Exposition: The Dust Bowl moving all over the Panhandle Area
Inciting Event: The man meets Joad

Chapter 9 Journal

Alot of reporters and such go to Gatsby's house and try to find out all the informaton about Gatsby's death. Nick decides he wants to set up a funeral for Gatsby and wants all his friends and family to come. Everyone Nick wnats to come to the funeral either turns it down or he can't find them. The only ones to be at Gatsby's funeral are Nick, Gatsby's father, some servants, and Owl Eyes. We learn a little about his father, and how Gatsby's bought him a house. Nick realizes how sick he is of where he is now, and decides he wants to move back to the west where he feels as though he belongs. He breaks up with Jordan when he hangs up on her cause she wanted to go out on a date with him, then she reveals to him that she's actually engaged now. Before Nick is about to leave, he finds Tom walking down the street. They chat for awhile, and Tom admits he told Wilson that it was Gatsby's car that hit Myrtle. This makes Nick really see the true side of Tom and Daisy and realizes they're self centered arrogant people. Nick goes over to Gatsby's mansion before he leaves back to Minnesota. He lays down staring at the moon light. He realizes that the people he's been hanging out with, are the ones who aren't his style.

Chapter 8 Journal

Nick is awakened by the sound of a taxi that has just dropped Gatsby off at his house. He gets up, and heads over there to see if anything is wrong. When he gets there the door is wide open, with Gatsby standing there, leaning against a table. He had been waiting for Daisy to come to the window is signal she was okay, but that didn't happen until about 4am. She went to the window and just turned out the light after standing there for about a minute. This marked the end to Daisy and Gatsby's secret relationship.
Nick noticed how big Gatsby's house truly was without all the party guests there day in and day out. They were searching for cigarettes in every room, and after awhile they found a dusty pack of them. Nick tells Gatsby that he should get out of town now that the police know it was him, or soon would be him. (Only because Tom couldn't blame it on Daisy) Gatsby wouldn't go until he knew what would happen between himself and Daisy in the future. He begins to tell Nick the story on how him and Daisy first met, and the relationship they built before he just left for war without telling her. She knew he was going to war, but he asked her to promise him that she'd wait for him until he returned, but she didn't. She married Tom because of their parents, and seeing how rich Tom was, she married him.
Gatsby's gardener comes up to him and tells him he needs to drain the pool so that the leaves don't clog up. Gatsby realizes he wasn't taken a swim in it at all, so he decides he finally wants too. As Nick is walking back towards his house, he turns around and lets Gatsby know that he is worth more than the Buchanan's and all his friends. Gatsby is Nick's best friend. The next day, Nick is so worried about everything, mostly the car accident. Jordan Baker calls him up, and Nick refuses the date she asks him out on. Seeing as how much Nick has fallen for Jordan through the entire book makes it seem weird that he would turn down a date she asked him on. Nick tries calling Gatsby, but it seems his line is busy the whole time. He finds out that Gatsby has been trying to keep the line open for a call from Detroit.
George Wilson has been sitting up all night, thinking about the tradgic event that has happened to his wife, Myrtle. Michealis has been sitting up with him all night. When dawn comes, Wilson is focused on the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg on the billboard. He feels as though they are the eyes of God, and that God is telling him to track down Myrtle's killer. He finds Tom one day, and Tom tells him who Myrtle's 'secret' lover is, he tells him Gatsby.
Wilson heads over to Gatsby' house, and finds him floating on a mattress in the pool, shoots him, and then shoots himself, each dying instantly. Nick returns back to his house, and finds Gatsby floating in the pool dead. He feels the emptiness in his heart for Gatsby.

A nurse walks into the room with a baby, which is tom and Daisys. Gatsby is stunned and cannot believe it's actually her baby. Daisy asks Gatsby if he would like to go into town. Tom, Nick, and Jordan all ride in Gatsby's car, while Gatsby and Daisy ride together in Tom's car. They stop at Wilsons gas station, where Tom gets out and see Wilson, looking like he's dead sick. Tom relizes that Wilson has found out that Myrtle has been having an affair but doesn't know with who. Wilson wants to move her west, so hopefully they can start fresh.
The friends decide to check into a suite at the plaza hotel, where Tom and Gatsby begino tussle with eachother. Tom states to Gatsby that he hates it when Gatsby calls him 'old sport' all the time. Tom claims that Gatsby is a bootlegger, and a crook all along with Wolfsheim.
Daisy begins to realize that she does love Gatsby, but she also loves Tom the more and more she spends with him as well. After all thi dram set in, Nick then realizes that it's his 30th birthday. While driving back to their homes, Nick, Jordan and Tom realize tha theres been an accident. Michealis the restaurant owner from next door said that a yellow car hit her while she was in the road. right away, Tom claims that Gatsby hit Myrtle, but isn't completely sure. When Nick gets back, he finds Gatsby in the bushes waiting til Tom and Daisy are in the same room together, and to see if Tom hurts her. He sees them in the dining room with ale and cold fried chicken on the table, holding eachothers hands. This is where Gatsby got used to his wealthiness world. When Cody died, he left Gatsby $25,000, but Cody's mistress, Ella Kaye, wouldn't let him keep it, so Gatsby decided to become wealthy himself.
Nick goes over to Gatsby's house one day since he hasn't seen him in awhile, and finds Tom there with Gatsby. Later, Nick finds Jordan, which tells him what her and Gatsby were chatting about at the party. She tells him that Gatsby is in love with Daisy, and wants to be back together with her. Study Questions Chapter 3

1. That he’s related to Kaiser, an old dictator. He was a spy for the German’s during the war. That he has killed a man before but acts natural, and that he’s a bootlegger, someone who sells knock offs of popular things illegally.

2. He’s not careless like Jordan Baker told him. And he doesn’t’ know anybody else at the party besides Jordan, who he ends up hanging out with the whole time, until he meets Gatsby for the first time.

3. He has a bunch of uncut books, which means that they haven’t been read before, and he has all these trinkets from when he supposedly went to Oxford, like a medallion with his name on the back.

4. He remembers him from college, supposedly Oxford, cause it’s close to Princeton. Nick doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

5. That she cheated in a golf tournament. She had moved her ball so she could have a better opening in her shot towards the pin. The caddy was going to tell on her, but refrained himself from bursting out words.

6. He writes many letters back to Minnesota, writing love on every one of them before he signs his name. That he may have a lady friend back home, but now that he lives in a different part of the country, that he may break up with that girl, and try his luck with Jordan.

7. He sees things that aren’t happening [car crash]. And he believes he’s been drunk for about an entire week now, which is strange.

8. Someone has crashed into a ditch, where a pale man gets out of the car, stating that he didn’t know that the car had stopped. Everyone thinks he’s a ghost or spirit that descended from the sky. Apparently the wheel had fallen off the car too, so this freaks everyone out. Then Owl Eyes tries to drive himself, which is unsuccessful, but then Jordan tries to make herself known, as the worst driver ever. She almost hits someone, but nicks his button with the bumper. This says that driving can easily be the meaning of death, or lead someone to death.

9. He finally meet Gatsby, Owl Eyes, see the real Jordan Baker, and witness how she feels and the true her. Reinforces the idea of bad drivers, and relationships.

10. This is where Nick finally meets Gatsby. They talk about everything in Gatsby past and a little about Nick. Shows you is a way what kind of person Gatsby is, but what he may tell you might not all be true. When Gatsby stated that he had attended Oxford, when Nick sees all his uncut books, this makes him see Gatsby as a different person and liar.

11. Bad Drivers, Car Crash, Inebriation.

12. Owl Eyes, Gatsby, Nick&Jordan, Car Crash, Nick asking Jordan out, Gatsby wanting to tell Jordan a secret, Nick and Gatsby conversing.

13. So she can have full control over the date and not have to be told what to do, but can be the one telling him what to do, since he never graduated high school.
